Membership

CEHMS membership is divided in two parts:


CEHMS Board members – annual membership fee of $40,000 (One vote per full membership)

CEHMS Regular members – annual membership fee of $20,000 (Cannot team to form a full membership; no voting or intellectual property rights)


In addition to all the benefits of the regular member, the board membership has following advantages:

1- Voting rights on the research plan at annual meetings. Each year board will meet in the month of August to discuss and revise the Center research plan. This plan forms the focus of the research conducted during the given fiscal cycle using the funds generated through memberships, donations, and workshops.

2- Selection of the advisory committee. An advisory committee comprising of eminent scientists and industrialist will be constituted by the board members. The advisory committee meeting will be held in conjunction with the annual energy harvesting workshop each year (last Wednesday and Thursday of January). The main function of the advisory committee is to recommend the board on scientific and financial policies.

3- Recommend on industry – government partnerships. The board members will be consulted on the new national and international partnerships which cover wide range of activities such as exchange programs, joint research activities, and complex equipment development.

4- Planning of the lab equipments and resources. The board members will be consulted on the acquisition of equipments over $100,000 and hiring of the research staff. 


The regular member benefits of CEHMS membership are as following:

1- Free participation in annual energy harvesting meeting

2- Free participation in two short courses (2 days) organized each year: A short course on smart materials and structures and energy harvesting technologies will be organized each year. Total 12 hours of lectures will be provided during these courses with discussions.

3- Invitation to present at national and international meetings organized by center faculties.

4- Access to the run the samples using the equipments in the center (charged only for the operator time)

5- Conduct short term projects through undergraduate and MS students (max one semester).

6- Free copy of annual center report (compilation of all the published papers by center faculties).

7Preference in hiring the graduates of the center.

8- Preference in licensing the patents filed by the center faculties.

9Joint participation in federal and state funding competitions, earmarks.

10Jointly develop and conduct certification programs for the entry level engineers in energy harvesting systems.

11- Consulting through the Center faculties.

12- Participating companies of the CEHMS may request for a visiting scientist/engineer to work at CEHMS for a maximum duration of one year. Additional expenditures will be associated with this arrangement to cover the living cost and required resources.

Donations:


All the interested parties are encouraged to provide a donation of specific fees associated with two levels of membership. The agreement between the party and Virginia Tech Foundation, Inc will be effective for the current fiscal year starting September 1. The membership application should be mailed along with the agreement form and a check of $40,000 or $20,000. The checks are payable to "Virginia Tech Foundation, Inc". Please mention at the top of the check – CEHMS membership fee.

 First Annual Meeting Announced


CEHMS will hold its first annual meeting in conjunction with 4th Energy Harvesting Workshop on January 29, 2009. The meeting will be held at “The Inn”. More information will be posted on the center website.

CEHMS Location


CEHMS will be co-located with Center for Intelligent Material Systems and Structures in Rm 310, Durham Hall. In October 2008, CEHMS will obtain new space at the ICTAS building.
